A chimney is necessary for any furnace not only to remove smoke, but also to create draft. In addition, when laying indoors, it acts as an additional heat accumulator. Equipping your own bath, you must consider these three components. And, of course, it should be remembered that the construction of the chimney is a responsible matter that requires a serious approach. To date, a sandwich pipe for a bath is the best option for solving this problem.

Design relevance
Each heat source using the energy of burning fuel is burdened with two serious problems:
- fire hazard;
- thermal expansion.
Thus, the created channel should transfer the minimum possible amount of heat to the outer surface. The degree of thermal expansion of the structure should also be minimized. The construction of a chimney from a sandwich pipe for a bath fully realizes these two requirements, so the use of such products is very reasonable. But its advantages are not limited to this: the building takes on an aesthetic appearance without sacrificing functionality. In addition, the ease of installation allows you to not attract outside masters.
Note! The name "sandwich pipe" is associated exclusively with the design features of the product. It consists of two segments inserted one into another, on the inner surface of which a layer of a special heat-insulating material is applied - mineral wool or basalt fiber.
Double-walled chimneys are produced in many versions. They differ in pipe material, type and thickness of insulator, diameters, etc.
Key Information and Key Requirements
Sandwich pipes have their own characteristics. For completeness, the following is a comparison of stainless steel and galvanized steel products. They replaced the brick chimney that was widely used until recently. Which material is better? Most home masters prefer a stainless steel sandwich pipe. And there are good reasons.
- Highest corrosion resistance. From this point of view, products of this type simply do not have competitors.
- Easily tolerate exposure to high temperatures. Even regular heating of the steam room to the maximum possible temperature will not negatively affect the material.
- Long service life. This is a consequence of the above qualities.
- Attractive appearance. This characteristic is of paramount importance for many people.
If we talk about galvanized coating, then it cannot boast of such properties. However, galvanized sandwich pipes cost significantly less. When choosing this factor is often crucial.
When planning to install a sandwich pipe in a smoke exhaust bath, you must know the requirements for it. They sound briefly like this:
- the cross-sectional area must exceed the value of this indicator of the outlet pipe, or be equal to it, but not less;
- ledges should not be present in the finished structure, and it must be positioned vertically.A maximum deviation of 30˚ is allowed. As for the horizontal displacement, it should not exceed 1 meter;
- if the roof is made of combustible materials (for example, roof tiles made of wood or bitumen), a pipe deflector equipped with a mesh must be installed at the end of the chimney. The mesh size is up to 5 × 5 millimeters;
- sandwich pipes for the bath passage through the floors should be treated with heat-insulating materials;
- when it is planned to create a horizontal shaft, its length should not exceed 1 meter;
- docking elements in the plane of the ceilings and the roof is not allowed. The reason for this requirement is that sometimes it is necessary to check these places. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure their visual accessibility.
- contact of the chimney with other communications (gas pipeline, electrical wiring, ventilation, etc.) is strictly prohibited;
- It is also forbidden to use a sandwich pipe as the first element in organizing the connection to the pipe.
Important! To ensure proper safety at least once a year, check the entire system.
How to choose a pipe
When purchasing such products, pay attention, first of all, to the following points:
- steel strength. It is its quality that determines the reliability of the design and the long life of the final product;
- pipe filling material and its tightness to the surface;
- joint strength. Two elements of the pipe are connected by welding. Therefore, the connection must be reliable, durable, free from defects;
The key point is this: when choosing, you should prefer sandwich pipes for a bath with a diameter of 15-20 centimeters.
It should be noted that the best option for purchase is a product produced by laser welding, because it is inherent in high quality. Well, of course, examine the inside of the pipe sandwich. The advantages of stainless and galvanized surfaces are briefly discussed above. It should be added to the above that the product with galvanization is recommended for gas boilers, since it tolerates good contact with the combustion products emitted during the operation of such units. If you chose sandwich pipes for a stainless steel bath, you can find out approximate prices for this product from the table below.

Making a chimney design for a bath yourself
We already know that the chimney consists of 1 meter segments inserted into each other. Do-it-yourself should only make the inner element of the sandwich pipe for the bath using stainless steel (this condition is mandatory). External can be made of any material, for example, brass or copper.
Use only galvanized pipes: when heated, their diameter changes. The internal insulation should be made of mineral wool, basalt fiber or expanded clay. When laying it, take into account one nuance: it is imperative to fill it manually with the provision of a ten-centimeter overlap.
How to connect pipe segments. There are several ways to connect: bayonet, "on the bridge of the cold", flanged, etc.
Note! For a bath, the choice is limited by two methods - “by condensate” or “by smoke”.
They differ in that:
- in the first embodiment, the inner pipe of the sandwich mounted on top enters the bell of the bottom pipe, so moisture does not get on the insulation. But in this case, smoke may leak out;
- the "smoke" connection is characterized by the absence of the above disadvantage.At the same time, condensate running down the walls can penetrate the sandwich through the cracks and damage the insulation;
- most construction companies leave the choice to the customer. For rooms, including baths, it is recommended to install a sandwich pipe with a "smoke" connection. This is due to the fact that in products of this type, condensate is formed in a small amount. The basic requirement remains unchanged: when installing the chimney, ensure the joints are tight.
Preparatory work. First of all, the location of the axis of the chimney is checked. The hosts who are versed in this matter carry out this event even at the stage of building the foundation of the furnace. The distance from the sandwich to the wall should be no more than 25 centimeters. In addition, the chimney pipe should be carried out so that it does not intersect the beams and the rafters of the roof and attic. You can perform these works after arranging the subfloor and fixing the wooden elements of the roof.
After installing the stove on the rough floor, set it in a vertical plane to the normal position. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the thickness of the floor covering and the height of the “cake” of the floor. In the center of the furnace outlet flange, lower the plumb line and see the results: this accessory should not cross the roof supporting elements. Only then the final installation of the sandwich pipes in the bath will be possible without any difficulties.
Installation procedure. The main work is carried out in the following order:
- in the place where the pipe passes through the ceiling, a so-called ceiling-through unit (hereinafter PUF) is mounted;
- the first pipe element is installed on the outlet flange of the furnace. It should be single-walled. The sandwich pipe is mounted from the second level;
- double-walled pipes are installed in turn and, if required by the design of the chimney, elbows and tees. They are displayed through the ceiling, after which they are attached to the walls and between each other;
- the passage of the pipe into the attic is isolated;
- until the attic is mounted revision with stand. It will provide an opportunity to clean the chimney from soot and, in general, conduct inspection of its cavity for preventive purposes;
- continued installation of the chimney in the attic, followed by the outlet of the pipe to the outside.
- at the place where the pipe exits through the roof, thermal insulation is performed;
- if the pipe rises high above the roof, this part is attached with braces
- A spark arrestor and fungus are installed on top of the finished product.
Good to know! Only the sandwich of products is allowed in the attic; installation of additional elements is prohibited.
Some installation nuances
The above is a general instruction for installing a do-it-yourself sandwich pipe for a bath. But some features require clarification.
Assembly and mounting to the wall: on one side the pipe is narrowed, therefore assembly is carried out by installing one in the other. To close joints and gaps, use special sealant. So you increase traction in the chimney. Get a sealant that can withstand temperatures up to 1000 ° C.
When connecting a sandwich of products, the following rules must be adhered to:
- on the outer pipes, sealant is applied to their outer surface;
- on the internal - outside the inner upper pipe;
- the joints of a single-wall pipe with a sandwich chimney or with other modules are lubricated with a sealant on the outside around the circumference;
- the connection of the sandwich elements is carried out using clamps on one side;
- sandwich elements are connected with tees and adapters by means of clamps on both sides;
- pipes are fixed to the wall every 2 meters using brackets;
- tees are also fixed with brackets.
- The passage of the chimney through the attic floor.The procedure for installing a sandwich pipe in a bathhouse is regulated by the requirements of SNiP regarding the passage of a chimney through wooden floors. If it is heated with wood, the temperature in the furnace reaches 800-1000 ° C. Due to this phenomenon, the chimney, as well as the boards in the ceiling, are heated to a level critical for wood.
To ensure safe passage of the chimney through the attic floor, the above-mentioned PPU is used. This unit has the shape of a square box with a side of 300 millimeters. The pipe goes through a hole in the horizontal wall. Ready-made in the market you can find PPU, both stainless steel and galvanized. Place of installation - ceiling opening. The PPU is installed before the assembly of the chimney elements.
Thermal insulation works in this place are carried out in the following order:
- PPU is placed in the aperture created in the ceiling together with the heat insulator, after which it is fixed;
- sandwich - the pipe is located on the lower elements so that the junction is located above the attic floor.
Advice! Check that there is a gap of at least 130 millimeters between the ceiling and the chimney element. You can leave it unfinished, but it is better to fill the inner space between the walls of the foam and the pipe with mineral wool.
- joints at the top and bottom are closed with stainless steel sheets. A heat insulator also fits between them and the ceiling.
- the passage of the chimney through the roof. Proper provision of the passage of the sandwich pipe through the roof provides the following sequence of actions:
- first you need to make sure that the distance from the ceiling to the pipe is at least 130 millimeters;
- then the undercover sheet is cut out. In size, it is larger than the opening in the ceiling, and the cross section of the hole located at its center is equal to the diameter of the chimney pipe element;
- one end of the pipe is threaded from the attic into the roof opening, and the other into the opening of the chimney located below the attic;
- a lead base (corner roof cut) is installed on the pipe from the roof side and lowered onto the roof. The base should be adjusted to the surface of the roof. This is done by tapping the hammer on it;
- cracks from the attic side between the ceiling and the chimney pipe element are filled with basalt wool and basalt cardboard;
- the undercover sheet rises all the way up, after which it is fixed with wood screws;
- the joint is covered with a rubber-based bituminous roofing sealant. This ensures that the joint is sealed.
As you can see, installing a sandwich pipe for a bath with your own hands is a matter that requires attention and concentration from the performer. And one of the indispensable components of success is the selection of quality materials that ensure the safety and reliability of heating the bath.
