Many products are produced from metal rolling, but the most popular denomination is a thin-walled, galvanized or steel pipe. Multifunctional purpose due to their versatility and excellent performance. These products are manufactured using different technologies, from different steel, but their quality remains impeccable due to standardization. However, when choosing products, it is important to navigate in their assortment.

Methods for the production of thin-walled products
Modern technologies are moving forward, offering alternative options for metal products, but thin-walled large-diameter pipes cannot be replaced by anything else - with the same technical parameters. Thin-walled stainless steel blanks are versatile for various national economic needs and wiring. They are distinguished by a long period of operation and functionality.
The production of galvanized thin-walled steel pipes is possible in three ways:
- Cold deformation of hot steel billets - according to GOST 9941-81. The assortment of thin-walled stainless steel pipes assumes different wall thicknesses - from 0.2mm to 22mm. The diameter of the products is from 5mm to 273mm.
- By electric welding method (electric arc welding surrounded by inert gas) or by induction method (high-frequency current). The production standards for such products are regulated by GOST 11068 - 81, while the assortment, as indicated in the tables, assumes a diameter in the range of 8mm - 102mm with a wall thickness of the product from 0.8mm to 4mm.
- Hot deformation, where a heated cylindrical preform is used. Special equipment makes it possible to form a similarity to the liner and modify it by rolling. Upon reaching the required parameters GOST 8732-78, there is a cutting of finished products with a diameter in the range of 20 mm - 530 mm with a wall thickness of 2.5 mm to 75 mm.
The main range of galvanized thin-walled products:
- profiled;
- round.
Attention! Length measured and unmeasured is regulated by GOST specified in the tables, regardless of the method of obtaining pipes.
Empty steel rods without welds are processed in the following ways:
- pressing;
- drawing;
- forging;
- rolling.
Standardization requirements
High requirements are imposed on metal products, regulated by the state standard, due to the heavy load on structures and highways from thin-walled galvanized pipes. They are subjected to extreme loads in the open air and harmful production, when exposed to high pressure, temperature extremes and aggressive environment.
Cold-formed thin-walled pipes with a large diameter of up to 108 mm and a wall thickness of up to 5 mm are made of stainless steel of the most common grades:
- 10X17 H13M2T;
- 10X23 H18;
- 12X18 H10T.
The regulation of the range of electric-welded steel pipes is made in accordance with GOST 10704-91. They go to the construction of frame structures for various purposes and electrical wiring.
Important! The quality of welded stainless steel products is monitored by the Quality Control Department after an ultrasonic inspection by a flaw detector - for defects in the seam line. Transportation of gaseous and liquid media under pressure with thin-walled welded pipes is not intended!
The main GOST 10705-80 for welded assortment is not applied, since the requirements for them are lower than for solid pipes. Thin-walled welded products of small diameter are produced by GOST 380-2005 from steel of other grades - St1, St2 and St3 or 08, 10, 20, in accordance with the requirements of GOST 1050-88. Round thin-walled pipes of general purpose, produced from hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel strip, are sold with a small wall thickness - within 1.0 - 2.0 mm.
A pipe is considered thin-walled if the ratio of the external diameter and the wall of the product is within 12.5 mm - 40 mm. A smaller proportion is defined as "particularly thin-walled." They have their own GOST 10498-82. They are produced in segments of measured and unmeasured length. The delivery form of galvanized pipes is in packages of 1.5-2.5 tons, from the warehouses of manufacturers, mainly by road or rail. Specialists determine a thin-walled round pipe of 4 varieties - groups B, V, D and E.
Connection Methods:
- welding;
- threaded joint.
Purpose of thin-walled pipes
Lightweight metal structures, which do not have high demands on loads, are most often constructed from an electric-welded pipe of thin-walled - round or profiled.
Products are used for:
- aircraft manufacturing;
- mechanical engineering;
- electrical wiring;
- upholstered furniture on a metal frame;
- promotional items;
- metal stairs and fences;
- construction "scaffolding";
- art installations and architectural structures;
- details of refrigeration and ventilation equipment;
- branch communications and other household needs.
- light temporary structures (stage, podium, collapsible tent);
- medical equipment;
- galvanized curtain rods for grommets;
- country water supply and irrigation systems;
- frame-shield hangars in agriculture;
- deep-sea structures and light moorings;
- stop pavilions and city fences;
- tents and other camping equipment.
It is interesting! Technologists of large enterprises, design bureaus and research institutes are working to expand the scope of application of thin-walled metal products. A relatively new functional is a thin-walled pipe for electrical wiring, although other synthetic materials are used for this.
To supply liquid media without pressure, thin-walled samples are used in the automotive industry and for shipbuilding. In aviation, they are used as part of pneumatic drives and hydraulic systems. The release of galvanized thin-walled pipes is used for the installation of external (external) structures. In addition, structures can be protected from the aggressive effects of weather and climate factors by special primers and processing with facade paints for metal work.
In the conditions of fierce competition, enterprises manufacturing galvanized products try to optimize production as much as possible and reduce its cost. But even with global savings, the entire range (for metal structures, wiring, communications and furniture) is focused on quality, durability and competitiveness.
Furniture parts that are manufactured from galvanized and chrome-plated metal pipes are mainly used as:
- decor;
- legs
- frame;
- clamshell blocks;
- part of the transformation mechanism.
Steel frame for furniture is very beneficial for manufacturers - the products are aesthetic, and the products withstand heavy loads.At the same time, a round thin-walled pipe is resistant to deformation, torsion or bending.
Another purpose of steel pipes is for laying electrical wiring. They are used by wiring teams to lay the cable, which needs thorough protection of the wiring from external factors. At the same time, the wall thickness does not matter, it is important that it is a hollow metal rod that can protect the high voltage power cable from possible accidents.
Installation, cutting and shaping of products
Thin-walled galvanized pipes bend well, and this facilitates the formation of the necessary curvature in various designs and schemes for electrical wiring. However, straight sections do not change shape at optimal load, so they are quite reliable during installation.
Pipes transform:
- special equipment;
- manual crossbow type bender;
- electromechanical drive.
Advice! To avoid ovalization of round pipes, use internal and external stops.
Installation and articulation of galvanized products is carried out by welding and fittings. When processing in industrial conditions it is applied:
- winding and running;
- drawing and passing through matrices;
- bending on supports;
- rolling.
The cost of galvanized thin-walled pipes or stainless steel depends on the diameter and length of the products - from 35 thousand rubles / t to 450 thousand rubles / t. The optimal price-quality ratio is for a round carbon steel water pipe. It is multifunctional, the scope is wide - from use for wiring to the production of office furniture.
